THE ESTATE

To speak of Puglia is to picture its clear sea, white beaches, rocky coastlines, and ancient watchtowers. But this land of culture and biodiversity offers much more.

Centuries-old olive trees, historic architecture, and a rich culinary tradition have shaped the region for generations. Its extra virgin olive oil and renowned wines are among the many expressions of a land whose flavors are enjoyed around the world.

Among these traditions is Villa Schinosa, our family winery in Trani.

Along the road from Trani to Castel del Monte lies the Villa Schinosa estate. At the end of its main drive, the white façade of the ancient Masseria, draped in bougainvillea, appears alongside the family chapel.

The estate spans more than 150 hectares of carefully tended vineyards, olive groves, and almond trees, touched by the sea breeze from the Adriatic just three kilometers away.

Nearby is Trani, with its historic whitewashed buildings, Romanesque Cathedral of San Nicola Pellegrino, and Swabian Castle—landmarks that have defined this remarkable landscape for centuries.

Established in 1884 and partially carved into the famous Trani stone, our historic cellars still preserve some of their original Slavonian oak barrels.

Here, grapes from our 65 hectares of vineyards are transformed into wine using a combination of tradition and modern winemaking. Stainless steel tanks and vitrified concrete vats are used during vinification, while our red wines mature in French oak barrels.

Our winery combines tradition with modern winemaking technology. Each grape variety is harvested at its ideal time, and because our vineyards surround the estate, the grapes can be processed quickly to preserve their freshness and varietal character.

More delicate white grapes are often harvested in the evening or at night to protect them from oxidation. The grapes are gently pressed using vacuum presses, while fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures between 16°C and 18°C.

This careful approach allows each variety to express its distinctive character and produce wines of exceptional quality.

Our vineyards are cultivated with respect for the land and the surrounding ecosystem. Following SQNPI-certified integrated production practices, we use natural fertilizers, prohibit chemical herbicides, and follow EU standards for integrated pest management.

Renewed progressively since 1960, our vineyards grow on the tuffaceous-calcareous soils characteristic of the area. Vines are trained using spurred cordon and Guyot systems, with varieties such as Chardonnay planted at approximately 4,500 vines per hectare.

Together with our unique microclimate and the expertise of our oenologist, Dr. Giuseppe Pizzolante, these practices allow us to bring out the distinctive qualities of each grape in our wines.

Moscato di Trani is one of the finest expressions of our land. As Villa Schinosa’s vineyards evolved, we remained committed to indigenous and southern Italian grape varieties while introducing select international varieties to complement them.

Today, our vineyards include Moscato Reale di Trani, Uva di Troia, Bombino Bianco and Nero, Primitivo, Aglianico, Falanghina, Fiano, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay.

Fiano holds a special place in our history. Don Ferdinando Capece Minutolo was the first to plant the variety in Apulia, helping pave the way for the Fiano I.G.P. wines produced in the region today.

Wine may be at the heart of Villa Schinosa, but our estate is also rooted in Apulia’s centuries-old tradition of olive cultivation.

Alongside our ancient Coratina olive trees, we cultivate La Favolosa (FS-17), Peranzana, and Picholine varieties. Together, they produce high-quality extra virgin olive oils with balanced, approachable flavors.

Our olives are carefully cold-milled to preserve their quality and freshness, producing two Villa Schinosa extra virgin olive oils: Intense Fruity and Medium Fruity.

In recent years, we have expanded our estate with modern, certified integrated-production almond groves, cultivating the Genco and Filippo Ceo varieties.

“In every bottle, there’s love for the work and the sacrifice of a life dedicated to my land.”

– Corrado Capece Minutolo
