Talking about Apulia, it’s hard not to think of its clear sea with white beaches, and the rocky coasts marked by ancient watchtowers. But this region, a container of culture and biodiversity, is much more. A land dotted with architectural and naturalistic jewels of rare beauty, it owes its renown also to those true living sculptures that are the centuries-old olive trees. Plants handed down for millennia from father to son, from which is extracted—often still using ancient methods—that extra virgin olive oil which, along with the renowned Apulian wines, tops the list of palate delights of this region. A vast repertoire of excellent food and wine products, pride and joy of our South, found on tables around the world. Among these excellences, there is also us: the Villa Schinosa winery in Trani.
Traveling along the Trani-Corato provincial road, on the way leading to Castel del Monte, at number 178, you’ll find the entrance to the main driveway that leads into our agricultural estate. At its end, the white facade covered in bougainvillea of the ancient Masseria and the family chapel can be glimpsed. Easily accessible by car, surrounding this typical dwelling of the Apulian countryside, the estate spans over 150 hectares, where among the orderly rows of carefully tended vineyards, olive groves, and almond trees, the sea breeze can be felt, with the sea itself being about 3 km away as the crow flies. We are just a stone’s throw from Trani, a town overlooking the Gulf of Manfredonia, with its ancient lime-washed buildings and the Romanesque Cathedral of San Nicola Pellegrino, which, along with the Swabian Castle – commissioned by Frederick II – are the 13th-century monuments that are emblematic of these places.
The winery has also been renovated, equipped with technologically advanced oenological tools. The harvest is diversified for each type of grapevine, and the proximity of the vineyards allows for the immediate processing of the grapes, thus maintaining their integrity so that they can best express their varietal characteristics. This is one of the reasons why the harvest often takes place in the evening and at night, as with the more delicate white grapes, thereby preserving them from oxidation.
Grape crushing is carried out in vacuum presses, and the fermentation of the musts – at a controlled temperature between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius – allows for the production of quality wines, especially aimed at discerning consumers with a demanding palate.
Our production activities ensure a product that is safe and of the highest quality. Oriented towards certified integrated production SQNPI, to have “healthy grapes,” they are based on the utmost respect for the ecosystem with the use of natural fertilizers and the absolute veto of chemical herbicides, while adopting an approach to integrated agriculture, in compliance with EU regulations for pest control.
The vineyards, renewed since 1960, are cultivated on medium-textured soils (tuffaceous-calcareous) and trained with trellis/spurred cordon and Guyot systems, with a planting density that – as with Chardonnay – is about 4500 plants per hectare. Thanks also to the microclimate we enjoy and to our oenologist, Dr. Giuseppe Pizzolante, we manage to express the best characteristics of our grapes in our wines.
In recent years, modern almond groves with integrated production certification have been planted, featuring the Genco and Filippo Ceo varieties.
